Variety Emma Kay, originating in Illinois. This is an example of nuts produced by us after going through the process of harvesting, hulling, washing, floating and drying. Kernel percentages range from 34-37 percent, mostly quarters.

2013 ready now. This was a good crop year, there were many more nuts than we were able to harvest so just harvested the better varieties, Sparrow, Emma K, and several of the expermintal and named and those I have grown from seed.

Ambrosia Beetle. Becoming a serious problem in this area. I believe it is as bad or worse than any other diseases or insects although the experts don't even recognize it. More than 20 percent of my trees are infected and have completely lost about 10 large trees. Limbs in the top will start dying, after leaf out in the spring leaves will wilt. A red, sometimes turns almost black sap will run down the trunk. It has started showing up in other orchards.

We only harvest improved varieties. Neel, Emma K, Football, Surprise, Sparrow, Jackson, and several we have developed from natural selection from these improved selections.

Several of the seedlings we are testing are from Farrington, Kwik Krop, Football, Emma K, and others from unknown improved varieties. We retain thos that show promise and eliminate others. We have very few wild trees that could pollinate. We hand pollinated Football/Emma K 20 years ago and have 7 from this cross we are testing. So far nothing exceptional.
